“All systems of divination can be tools into another world. Join me as we explore one Tarot card each month to see how the Tarot can serve as a tool towards spiritual awakening and aligning with your personal sovereignty. " - Nikki Aggarwal
As I shuffled through my trusty Tarot deck, I held the following intention in my heart:
What card would serve the readers most in this, the very first month, of 2026?
Our result?...
The 6 of Cups!
To receive this card for January is intriguing because the card that we received for January 2025 was the Five of Cups! Getting the Six of Cups now signals a continuation of, or deepening into, the work that we started last year, which makes sense from a Chinese astrological perspective since 2025 was the year of the Snake, and 2026 is the year of the Horse. The Snake helped us create space in our lives by asking us to shed that which no longer served us, while the Horse brings movement and momentum that supports our ability to create the new lives for which we just created that new space.
Plus, the fact that we got a 6 card for this January is extremely synchronistic to the year since 2026 ends in a 6! Physically, the number 6 is open at the top and enclosed at the bottom, which means that it I structured to receive energy, guidance, and insight from above, and then gestate what it receives so that it can be manifested, or “birthed,” into the physical. Remember, though, since this number is “wide open” at the top, it is important to establish clear boundaries of discernment so that you know what is yours to catch and what is meant to slide off your back.
For a quick summary of the suit of Cups, remember that Cups represent the element of Water, and for us humans that equates to our emotions. The cards of this suit are passionate, sensitive, and in touch with the sensations of their feelings. While they embody traits of enthusiasm and conviction, they can also show up as lacking discipline, irresponsible, and unrealistic, especially if they use their emotions as excuses to check out of life. Ultimately, the journey of this suit aims to teach us the insight we need to trust and to respond to our emotions rather than to be ruled by them. They do so by showing us how to connect our outer awareness to our inner awareness, and then to take action based on this integrated perspective.
So, let’s dive deeper into the Six of Cups to see what it wants to teach us this January!
From a high-level perspective, the Six of Cups represents the energy of creativity, with the aim to help you use your memories and feelings in service towards your creativity. It’s about channeling what you feel into what you create. This archetype has the potential to show us what it feels like to be satisfied and to be gifted with abundance after a stretch of focused hard work. By this point of the suit, grief has been experienced and processed, and it is time to return to joy and faith. This card acknowledges that past experiences have shaped your character, and that many experiences, especially from childhood, can take on new meaning when seen from an adult’s level of wisdom.
Meaning, this card acknowledges that we are at a point in our lives where we can redefine the experiences that initially left us feeling victimized, mistreated, and taken advantage of in a new way that empowers us to see ourselves as survivors who can distill the pearls of wisdom, insight, and learning from those difficult experiences. In other words, this card encourages us to turn past trauma into soul power; to transmute what once felt like the worst of our lives into what can now feel like the steppingstones towards reclaiming our strength, dignity, and sovereignty!
That’s why the energy of this card is so important for January – as a fresh new month to a fresh new year, use the Six of Cups as a reminder that you are in charge of your life, that you get to interpret your past in a way that empowers you, and that you have the power of choice in all aspects of your inner world, especially those related to your emotions!
Empowered, the energy of the Six of Cups is focused on reviewing the past from a neutral perspective so that it can determine what is still relevant versus what irrelevant. It includes a call to complete any unfinished business that you have ignored as an unconscious form of self-sabotage and to get on with things already. Most importantly, it knows that holding onto things for nostalgic sake is a self-destructive pattern, and so the Six of Cups actively works towards neutralizing the energetic charge of any such memories – good or bad.
Wounded, the energy of the Six of Cups lacks the desire to try new things in life because it is stuck on old ways of doing things in the hope that old, irrelevant dreams may still come true without any effort. This wounded energy may show up as an obsession on past success that keeps a person frozen in time. Ever heard a person talk about the glory days of High School, when they excelled over everything and all of life was at their fingertips? Did you feel how limiting that conversation was, or did you see how that person may have used these memories as an excuse to not try to make something of their life as an adult? This is a textbook example of how nostalgia over happy memories can stifle our progress forward.
In its full potential, the archetype of the Six of Cups emphasizes individual inner growth work and soul-searching that is of service to the collective. It speaks to the innocence of your inner child who is still alive inside of you, full of love, and with a desire to integrate that love and innocence into the blended world of the physical and the divine. So, while this card speaks to the progress you have already made in your life, it also hints at the next level of growth, integration, contraction, and expansion that you are about to begin. So, for January, I invite and encourage you to embrace the guidance of the Six of Cups. From a practical perspective, to utilize the energy of the Six of Cups for your mental self-care, reconnect with your inner child’s sense of wonder, curiosity, awe, and
amazement. Gaze at the stars with wonder and contemplate the infinite nature of space. For your body’s self-care, you can get a massage, Reiki, or acupuncture; some form of energy medicine to rejuvenate your body. For your spirit’s self-care, explore your inner world to connect with what you really want, then ask for it directly, clearly, and effectively. Also, you can work with borage flowers to bring joy back into your life. You can put borage flowers in a sacred bath to bring buoyancy to your spirit, and you can work with its essence to encourage you to give freely without expecting anything in return.
Finally, here are some journaling questions that you can ask yourself and write about when you work with the archetype of the Six of Cups:
When old memories or feelings come into your awareness, how do you engage with
them?
What does nostalgia offer you now in the short term; how does it affect you in the long
term?
How can you recognize old patterns that keep you stuck?
When you notice an old pattern taking over, what can you do in the moment to disrupt
the pattern and make a new choice?
In what ways can you be more gentle with yourself, especially for being human?
What does the next phase of your new future look like?
What one step can you take today towards that new future?
These questions are an invitation to dive deep into your psyche to explore what is there that you want to keep, what you might want to adjust, or what you might want to get rid of completely. Much of the process of growth, development, and ascension involves exploring the inner depths of our own minds so that we can excavate the gold that is deep within and wash away the sediment that doesn’t belong there anymore.
Think of inner inquiry like sifting for gold. That is how I like to see it.
